Vol. 106 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Claureen River (Mayo).

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the damage caused, in the electoral divisions of Ballintubber and Killawalla, arising from the choked condition of the Claureen River; and if he will take steps immediately to have the river cleaned and deepened.

I have not received any representations, nor have I any information concerning the matter referred to.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary interest himself in the matter on my representations now? This particular river is doing very severe damage, and the cost of cleaning it would be small in comparison with other jobs of a similar character. Will the Parliamentary Secretary have a survey made?

I am afraid the Deputy is not correct in saying that the cost of cleaning this river would be small. From the maps, it appears to be a large river and the cleaning could not be carried out at a small cost.

With your permission, Sir, I wish to assure the Parliamentary Secretary that this is not a big job. The amount of damage done to as many as 300 farmsteads is very serious and the cost of cleaning it would not be very big.
