Vol. 107 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he will consider introducing legislation with a view to increasing the maximum amounts payable under the Workmen's Compensation Acts, in view of the increased cost of living.

Under Emergency Powers (No. 274) Order, 1943, the maximum compensation for total incapacity was increased from 30/- per week to 37/6 per week. I have arranged for an examination of the whole question of workmen's compensation in relation to the comprehensive scheme of social insurance. It will be appreciated that this examination must take some time.

Pending the examination, will the Minister increase the 37/6?

No. As I promised already, I think we should be able to publish some White Paper or some forecast of our intention with regard to social insurance before the end of the year.
