Vol. 108 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Navigation Employees' Wages.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that a number of men, employed on the Shannon Navigation at Limerick, and resident within the borough of Limerick, are in receipt of wages of £2 3s. 9d. a week; if he is further aware that the rate paid to unskilled men in the Limerick County Borough by private employers, the Limerick County Borough Council, the Department of Defence, and the Electricity Supply Board is £4 14s. 0d. a week; and if he is prepared to take steps to bring the wages of the men employed on the Shannon Navigation up to the local standard of pay.

While I am aware that one quasi-permanent man and some casual men employed on the Shannon Navigation at Limerick are at present in receipt of wages of 45/- a week less appropriate insurance deductions, I am not aware that the rate paid to unskilled men in the Limerick County Borough by the persons and bodies mentioned in the second part of the question is generally £4 14s. 0d. a week. Steps have already been taken to review the wages of the men employed on the Shannon Navigation and they will receive an appropriate increase in wages at a very early date.
