Vol. 108 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sums Spent in Dollar Area.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in respect of the nine months ended 30th September, 1947, or up to the latest date for which the information is available, the sums expended in the dollar area, during 1947, on the purchase of: (a) wheat and flour; (b) animal feeding stuffs; (c) motor spirits; (d) coal and other fuel; (e) films; (f) motor cars and parts; (g) jewellery; (h) wearing apparel, not including boots and shoes; (i) boots and shoes, (j) hosiery, and (k) piece goods.

As many of the transactions in respect of which dollars were allocated in each of the months of the present year are not yet completed, it is not possible to give final figures for any part of this period in respect of the sums expended in the dollar area on purchases of the commodities mentioned by the Deputy. The total sums allocated for such purchases from 1st January to 31st August, 1947, are, however, shown in a table which I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have circulated with the Official Report. It may be assumed that the final figures of expenditure will not differ substantially from these allocations.
