Vol. 108 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Quotas.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the experience gained by his Department during the past five years regarding the unsuitability of certain areas for wheat growing, he will consider the desirability of having the wheat quota reduced in such areas.

I do not propose to alter the wheat quotas for the three districts from those prescribed in the Tillage Order for 1947. As I indicated early this year I will not press for the growing of wheat on any land which I am satisfied is not suitable for the crop. It must be made clear, however, that, where land is suitable, I will expect the occupier to comply fully with the Order and where only part of his holding is suitable, I will expect him to make the best effort possible in the circumstances.

Will land infested with "take-all" disease be deemed to be unsuitable for the cultivation of wheat?

I shall be guided in these matters by the officials of my Department.

Will the Minister be guided by the figures supplied to him by millers and merchants who are supplying the seed and purchasing the wheat, as these figures indicate that there is very low yield in certain areas?

I will be guided by all relevant factors reported to me by people who are competent and who are employed by my Department.

Who are competent? Does the Minister think that farmers can grow wheat at 55/- a barrel? If he does, he is making a hell of a mistake.

Do not be crossing swords with me in that fashion, Deputy.
