Vol. 108 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Delivery of Plough Fittings.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the Wexford Engineering Company, Limited, are not executing orders for plough fittings, pending the fixing of new prices by his Department; that farmers anxious to plough early for winter sowing purposes are unable to carry out this essential work; and if he will ensure that immediate delivery is made now and that, in future, deliveries will be executed up to the last day a price-fixing Order is in operation, thus preventing withholding in anticipation of new and higher prices.

I understand that the Wexford Engineering Company, Limited, have delayed the delivery of machinery to their agents pending a decision as to the prices for winter machinery. The company was informed on the 26th September last that a condition precedent to any decision as regards an increase in prices was the submission of draft accounts to the 31st August. These accounts were only received at the end of October.

I have now authorised an increase in the prices of agricultural machinery and fittings and there is no reason why immediate delivery should not be made. I agree as to the desirability of having any necessary price adjustments made as early as possible in the season, but in the matter of fixing winter prices in this case difficulty arises where a company's financial year ends on August 31st.

Would the Minister consider, in future, where there is a prices Order in operation, that the matter ought to be determined in time for the normal season's work?

I will determine it in time, if I get information on which a determination can be made in time.

Will the Minister withdraw the tariffs, quotas and restrictions on the import of agricultural machinery and parts?

There are no tariffs, quotas or restrictions on the import of agricultural machinery.

On ploughs?

On mowing machines?

The Deputy is five years out of date.

When did you take them off?

Five years ago.

That is not true.

Will the Minister say whether a prices Order is in operation until the new Order supersedes it?

Yes. It is not a prices Order; an authority to the firm to effect the increase has been issued.

Mr. Corish

There is no obligation on them to supply if they are anticipating the increase?

I do not control the firm.

Mr. Corish

Is the Minister prepared to agree that the reason for the delay in the execution of these orders is on account of the shortage of foundry coke to the firm concerned?

Not altogether.
