Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Debt and Interest Payments.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the present amount of the national debt; and the total annual payment, by way of interest, on Government loans, stocks and overdrafts.

The gross national debt is now approximately £89.2 million, exclusive of the capital value of the annual contributions under the Housing (Finance and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, which is approximately £9.5 million. The assets held amount to £44.8 million. The annual interest charge in respect of the debt of £89.2 million is approximately £3,125,000; the earnings on the assets are expected to amount to £1,230,000.
