Vol. 110 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Expenditure—Select Committee.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the enormous cost of all Government Departments, he will ask the Dáil to set up a select committee to inquire into public expenditure with a view to effecting economies.

The Government is at present engaged in a review of the expenditure of all public Departments and associated bodies and it would, I think, be somewhat premature at the moment to set up a select committee of the Dáil to inquire into public expenditure with a view to effecting economies. If, however, any Deputy can assist the Government by making concrete suggestions for economy, such assistance will be welcome, as will the general support of the House for such economies as I or my colleagues in the Government are able to effect.
