Vol. 110 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Indoor and Outdoor Swimming Facilities.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that in order to encourage local authorities to provide adequate indoor and outdoor bathing and swimming facilities within their administrative areas, the former Government had decided to contribute up to 60 per cent. of the cost of the necessary works, and that this fact had been announced by the Minister's predecessor in a speech at Bray, reported in the Press on December 19th, 1947; whether he proposes to honour this commitment, and, if so, when he proposes to communicate the fact to the local authorities.

Mr. Murphy

The decision referred to has not yet been communicated formally to local authorities. The matter is at present under consideration. I promise that the issue of the communication will be expedited.

Is the Minister aware of the urgent necessity for facilities in the Dublin area for swimmers who are training for the forthcoming Olympic Games?

Mr. Murphy

I have no personal knowledge of the urgency of the matter so far as Dublin is concerned. I can only say, on the information before me, and having regard to the undertaking given, that the further consideration of this matter and the issuing of a communication to the local authorities will be hastened as much as possible.

Mr. Collins

I should like to urge upon the Minister the necessity for immediate facilities in the Dublin area for those who are training for the Olympic Games.

Mr. Murphy

I shall be glad to receive any representations the Deputy has to make.

In view of the fact that the late Government has already taken a decision in this matter, is it necessary that the private motion in the name of Deputy Collins——

"That Dáil Éireann is of opinion that modern swimming and bathing facilities are urgently required for our cities and our towns"

—should appear on the Order Paper?

Mr. Murphy

I do not think I am called upon to answer that.

No, it is quite a separate question.

I observe that Deputy MacEntee has found his voice again.
