Vol. 110 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann Hotels.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the circumstances in which the hotels and catering departments of Córas Iompair Éireann were placed under the control of a non-Irish company, viz., Gordon Hotels, Limited.

I have no statutory function in regard to the management of Córas Iompair Éireann hotels. I am advised, however, that the company have a special problem during the next few years in that considerable modernisation and alteration of kitchens and other sections of their hotels are necessary. They consider that it would be in the best interests of the company to employ for a couple of years a firm who have the services of a number of expert advisers in each specialised field of hotel management. I understand that this firm will be responsible to the board in the same manner as any of the individual employees of the company.

Mr. Lehane

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is the Minister aware that the employment of this non-Irish company has resulted in the disemployment of Irish workers?

I am not aware that that may be so, but, as I stated in the earlier part of my reply to this question, I have no statutory function in the matter.

Mr. Lehane

Does the Minister envisage or contemplate introducing legislation to make Córas Iompair Éireann amenable to this House?

All I can say in that connection is that I hope that the whole transport system of this country will be brought under review as soon as possible.
