Vol. 110 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lime Subsidy Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will permit county committees of agriculture to include dried lime from sugar factories in their lime subsidy scheme.

I am informed that it is only at Tuam that the waste sugar factory lime is being produced in a dried form or likely to be produced in the future, and as the price at which it is disposed of by the sugar company is already equivalent to a subsidised price and is, in fact, a most attractive one if the product is used locally, as it ought to be, I do not propose to authorise further subsidy under the lime subsidy scheme administered by the committees of agriculture.

Mr. Lehane

Is the Minister aware that there are tens of thousands of tons of this lime being dumped in Carlow area?

I am not so aware, but if there was dumping in the locality it would be traced by the company. I trust that the matter will be put to the test, and I venture to say that no form of lime will be dumped.
