Vol. 110 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sugar Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he proposes to increase the sugar ration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantities of sugar (i) in stock in this country, distinguishing between refined and raw sugars, (ii) purchased and awaiting shipment and (iii) in store outside this country; and if he will also state the present average monthly consumption of sugar and the estimated monthly consumption if rationing ended.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 88 and 89 together.

On the 1st April, 1948, the total stock of sugar held in this country amounted to 45,567 tons refined and 7,978 tons raw. On the same date the quantity of sugar purchased and awaiting shipment was 22,920 tons and, in addition, 5,390 tons were stored outside the country.

The present monthly consumption of sugar averages 7,400 tons, and it is estimated that the monthly requirement, if rationing were abolished, would average 10,000 tons.

It is not my present intention to increase the sugar ration.
