Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Meals.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that school meals are not provided for children attending certain schools in South Kerry; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to arrange for the extension of the school meals scheme to the schools in question.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Under the School Meals (Gaeltacht) Act, 1930, meals are served to children attending national schools in certain district electoral divisions in the Gaeltacht scheduled in the Act. An extension of meals to schools in other rural areas would require fresh legislation. I am having inquiries made as to the possibility of extending the scope of the scheme to areas other than those in which it operates at present.
