Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Estate Road.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that since July, 1947, road building has been in progress at Castlesaunders Estate Forest, County Cavan, and that the materials are being quarried at Donagh Quarry, County Fermanagh, and that County Fermanagh contractors are engaged upon the hauling of these stones and employ Six-County labour; further, if he is aware that ample material has been and is available adjacent to the estate forest to fill the needs of this project; and if, in view of the unemployment caused in the area by the close-down of peat production, he will take steps to ensure that the expenditure of the Cavan ratepayers' money goes towards the creation of employment and for the purchase of materials in County Cavan.

Road-making or repairing has been in progress at part of Belturbet Forest for some time past. I am advised that great difficulty was experienced in getting supplies of suitable stone for this work at a reasonable price, and that finally a tender for the supply of 200 tons was accepted from a contractor with an address at Clones. I do not understand the reference to the Cavan ratepayers' money. Forestry operations are not financed out of local rates.
