Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Maigue Embankments.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission propose to repair the breaches in the banks along the River Maigue near Adare, County Limerick, caused by heavy floods early this year; and, if so, when it is proposed to start the necessary repair work.

The Land Commission have no responsibility for the repair or maintenance of the embankments adjoining the river Maigue at Adare, County Limerick. In connection with the sale proceedings of the estate of the Earl of Dunraven, Rec. No. E.C. 1044, under the provisions of the Irish Land Act, 1903, a fund was established to assist in the maintenance of embankments and other works at Adare. The fund which was held and administered by a body of local trustees has been almost completely exhausted and is now entirely inadequate to maintain the works in effective condition. The Land Commission have had under consideration representations regarding the repair of breaches in the embankment at Ballycasey and they have decided to undertake the execution of the works necessary without prejudice to their powers to recover the cost incurred by means of additional annuities charged on the lands benefited. The work will be put in hands as soon as possible.
