Vol. 110 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison System.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider setting up a commission to consider and report on the existing prison system so as to bring it into conformity with accepted modern standards for treatment of penal offenders.

I am not aware that the treatment of prisoners in this State is below accepted modern standards, as the Deputy seems to assume. I am advised, officially, that there are few, if any, countries in which prisoners are better treated, and I am inclined to agree with that view. If, however, the Deputy has in mind any particular alterations of the present law or practice and will let me have his suggestions I shall certainly consider them carefully.
