Vol. 110 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tithe Gloine i gConamara.

D'fhiafraí

den Aire Talmhaíochta an abróidh sé alos Scéim na dTithe Gloine i gConamara cé mhéad acu a bhí ceaptha; cé hiad na háiteacha a ceapadh lena n-aghaidh; cé mhéad tithe a ceapadh le haghaidh gach áit acu; agus má rinneadh aon athrú ar an scéim, an dtiúbhraidh sé miontuairisc ar an athrú sin.

At the Connemara centre the scheme provided for the erection of a group of 100 glasshouses. These were allotted to applicants who offered suitable sites in the selected area, as follows:—

Spiddal

28 houses

Inverin

44 houses

Ballinahown

6 houses

Carraroe

17 houses

Costello

5 houses

Five applicants from the Inverin district have withdrawn from the scheme and it is not proposed to select other applicants to replace them. Otherwise no change is proposed in the scheme as originally planned.

Will the Minister say why is it not proposed to replace the five who have withdrawn?

Because I think the scheme is a disgusting fraud and I am greatly relieved that five of the applicants have had the good sense to withdraw from it and spare themselves the substantial loss that I am afraid the remaining 95 are liable to sustain and which I will be called upon to mitigate, probably, in two or three years.

A long chance.

If the scheme is a disgusting fraud why does the Minister not scrap it?

I did my level best to scrap it, but found that to do so would be to break an undertaking given by my predecessor in office, which I recognised at once was as binding upon me as it had been upon him.

Why did not the Minister think of that in time?

Was not the Minister aware that that undertaking had been given when he brought in his first proposal?

I was not so aware. I have now learned and have given effect to my predecessor's promise.
