Vol. 110 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dismissal of Air Companies' Staffs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of staff of Aer Rianta, Teoranta, and its subsidiary companies, and of their sub-contractors who have received notice of dismissals since 18th February, 1948, distinguishing between (a) professional staff; (b) clerical staff, and (c) other staff.

I am informed by the companies that since 18th February, 1948, notices of dismissal were issued to 78 members of the staffs of Aer Rianta, Aer Lingus, and Aerlinte Éireann. Of these, 71 were Aer Lingus staff and this number included 54 staff members whose services were found to be redundant following the decision taken in December, 1947, to effect retrenchment and all-round economy by rationalisation of the company's activities. The action taken under that decision had resulted in the release previous to the 18th February, 1948, of 200 workers.

Of the total of 78 to whom notices were issued since the 18th February, 1948, there was one member of the professional staff, 17 members of the clerical staff, and 60 members of other staff.

I have no information as to any notices of dismissal which may have been given to members of the staff of sub-contractors of the air companies.
