Vol. 110 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bread Ration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware (a) that in non-wheat growing areas, such as South Kerry, the ration of bread and flour is entirely insufficient, especially for labouring men; (b) that families in such districts are obliged to purchase such commodities in the black market at exorbitant prices; (c) that families who cannot afford to obtain additional supplies in that way have to go hungry; and if he is prepared to examine the position with a view to the granting of a substantial increase in the ration of bread and flour in the areas referred to.

I cannot see my way at present to authorise any increase in the ration either generally or to special areas.

Supplementary allowances of bread and flour can be made available to certain classes of workers and, if the Deputy will give me particulars of the persons he has in mind, I will see whether anything can be done to assist them.
