Vol. 110 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Water Supply Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state why the Donnybrooke, Douglas, County Cork, water supply scheme which was sanctioned by his Department last year has not yet been proceeded with; and, in view of the urgent need for water and sanitation in this area, if he will take steps to see that these amenities are provided without further delay.

I understand that the delay which has occurred in starting work on this scheme is due to the difficulty experienced by the contractor in obtaining supplies of pipes. This difficulty has arisen on a number of water supply schemes throughout the country, as the minimum period of delivery guaranteed by suppliers of pipes ranges from nine to 12 months. I am having this matter taken up with the responsible authorities with a view to seeing whether the delay in deliveries can be lessened.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is the Minister aware that some three years ago a private firm, in view of the urgent necessity for this work, was prepared to carry it out; that they were advised by the local authority not to do so and informed that the local authority would do the work itself?

Mr. Murphy

I am afraid I have no knowledge of that and, as the Deputy will readily admit, no responsibility for that situation if it did arise.
