Vol. 110 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refusal of Claims under Unemployment Assistance Acts.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of each of the last three years the proportion of claims for benefits under the Unemployment Assistance Acts which were refused on the grounds that the claimant was not genuinely seeking work.

Figures which would enable the proportion to be calculated in the form in which the Deputy seeks the information are not available. A comparison, however, of the total weekly payments of unemployment assistance made in each of the years 1945, 1946 and 1947 with the total number of weeks for which payment of unemployment assistance was refused on the ground that applicants were not genuinely seeking work, shows that the percentage of weeks for which unemployment assistance was refused was .65 of 1 per cent. in 1945; .75 of 1 per cent. in 1946, and .74 of 1 per cent. in 1947.
