Vol. 110 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will consider acquiring portion of the farm of Mrs. Ryan, Castlereagh, Irishtown, County Mayo, for the relief of local congestion.

Proceedings for the resumption of part of this holding were instituted last year. The tenant lodged a petition against resumption and the Land Commission, after full consideration, decided not to proceed further with the matter.

I want to remind the Minister that in this locality there are some 18 small farmers living in a village called Meelick and their valuations range from 6/- to £4 18s. 0d. and that of this land in question approximately 60 or 70 acres would satisfy this congestion if it were taken over. It is right beside them.

Has the Deputy a supplementary question?

I want to remind the Minister.

Reminding the Minister is not a supplementary question.

If it is necessary—I do not think it should be—I would ask him to get the commissioners to reconsider their decision.

I am aware of the congestion in this particular locality. The decision was taken some time ago to go into the question of relieving the congestion in the area.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that considerable rearrangement and resettlement on lands still remains to be carried out at Kilvine, Irishtown, County Mayo; and, if so, whether he will ensure that this matter is expedited.

This congested estate, formerly owned by Mr. T.H.B. Ruttledge, contains numerous small holdings in Kilvine and the surrounding district. It is one of several similar estates awaiting preparation for resale. The work of rearranging and enlarging holdings on congested estates in Mayo and the other congested counties has been proceeding, and no opportunity will be lost of bringing these cases to conclusion as rapidly as possible.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken to acquire the farm of Mr. Martin Brennan, Cottage, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, for the relief of local congestion.

The Land Commission are having an inspection made of the lands of Cottage, owned by Martin Brennan.

Is there any supplementary question?

There is no need. An inspection is being made which the previous Minister refused to make. It will be made, now that that former Minister has gone.

It is the same answer as was given by the previous Minister.

It is not.
