Vol. 111 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Bone Meal.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that there is a grave deficiency in mineral nutriment resulting in high mortality rate in calves up to year old, and if, in view of the fact that a big percentage of this mortality rate could be obviated by a supply of bone meal, he will state to what extent increased supplies of this commodity are likely to become available within the next few months.

I am not aware of any abnormal mortality among calves. But if adequate rations of crushed oats and milk are provided during the winter and access to young pastures adequately enriched with lime and phosphates in summer, there should not occur heavy mortality amongst calves in reasonably hygienic surroundings.
