Vol. 111 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Irish Spelling.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether representations have been made to him concerning the new spelling of Irish and whether he intends to withdraw the instructions to teach it, issued to the schools by his Department.

I have received a number of representations, some formal but mostly informal, concerning the new spelling of Irish and I have had some discussions with those interested. Generally, my attitude in the matter is as explained during the debate on the Estimates. I do not intend to withdraw the instructions now issued to the schools, but I invite and I shall be glad to receive and to consider representations in the matter either now or arising out of the experience in the schools during the next year or two.
