Vol. 111 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Paper.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the importation of paper into Ireland is causing unemployment at Clondalkin, Drimnagh and Killeen Paper Mills; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to protect the industry against competition from foreign sources.

I am aware that the Clondalkin and Drimnagh Paper Mills have had to resort to short-time working recently, but it is not clear to what extent this is due to the importation of paper. I am however having the matter investigated. I am not aware that the Killeen Paper Mills are at present working short-time.

There is at present a protective duty on certain packing, wrapping, and manila papers, which types form a considerable part of the output of these mills.
