Vol. 111 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlebar Building Sites.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reasons for the delay in sanctioning the compulsory purchase orders for the purpose of acquiring building sites at Castlebar, County Mayo, which have been held up in his Department since January last; and if, in view of the acute housing shortage in Castlebar, he will ensure that the matter is expedited.

The full documents necessary for the examination of the compulsory purchase order in this case were not received in the Department until the 19th March last. Since that date there has been no avoidable delay in arranging for the holding of a local inquiry into the matter. It is hoped to hold the inquiry within a few weeks.

I understand that the Minister is visiting Castlebar on Monday next to discuss housing with us. Before he comes, will he get some decision out of the Department, as we are instructed by the county manager that this matter has been lying in the Department since January last?

Mr. Murphy

The Deputy will understand that the next step in this case is the holding of an inquiry by an inspector of the Department. He will understand that a date has been fixed provisionally in the next week or two for the holding of that inquiry. If there are any steps that I can take to expedite the holding of that inquiry I will be very glad to do so.
