Vol. 112 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Road Traffic Signs.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the road traffic signs recently erected in Cork are in the English language only; and, if so, whether he will state if it is now the policy of his Department to permit the elimination of the Irish language from all signs of this nature.

It is understood that the signs erected recently by Cork Corporation are temporary signs. These will be replaced when new signs are available. It is intended to make regulations under Section 69 of the Local Government Act, 1946, prescribing new traffic signs. In so far as wording will be used on these signs, it will be in Irish as well as English. The Deputy should understand that this is a matter for the Cork Corporation.

Does it not require the sanction of the Minister?

Not the erection of signs. This is a matter entirely for the Cork Corporation. As the Deputy is no doubt aware these signs were merely temporary, due to existing shortages.

They are very elaborate temporary signs.

They will be taken down as soon as the new signs arrive.
