Vol. 112 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike in Comhlucht Siúcre Éireann.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the seriousness of the position in the sugar factories in Ireland; and, if so, whether he will take steps to bring about a compromise between Comhlucht Siúcre Éireann Teoranta and the representatives of the men at present on strike.

I am aware that for many months past there has been a dispute in the sugar factories arising out of the refusal by some of the employees to accept a recommendation of the Labour Court. I am also aware that there have been conferences recently between the general manager of the company and representatives of the workers in an endeavour to reach a settlement. I am not prepared to intervene in the matter.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is the Minister aware that there is grave danger of the beet crop being lost in the area this year, because even if the strike were to finish to-morrow, I have it from some of the fitters that they would not be able to handle the beet until the middle of January? Will the Minister take any steps to have the matter settled before it is too late?

Statements such as that mentioned by the Deputy, were made and were conveyed to me. I have been assured by the sugar company that there is no foundation whatever for those statements and that they are satisfied that everything is going all right. Those are the assurances I have been given.

Will the Minister ensure that no desire on the part of the management not to take into employment again persons at present on strike will prevent or hinder an early settlement?

That is a separate question.
