Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction the water and sewerage schemes for Tralee town as passed by Tralee Urban District Council so that this work, by being started soon, may give much-needed employment for Christmas.

Mr. Murphy

These schemes consist of extensions of the existing water and sewerage systems. One of the extensions is intended to serve a new housing scheme at Rock Street. On the 12th instant a communication was sent to the council, setting out in detail various amendments which it was recommended should be made in the contract documents prepared for the work.

The remaining extensions consist, for the most part, of straightforward main-laying, and, in view of the high tenders received when the works were advertised for contract, I have suggested that the council should consider carrying them out by direct labour. In this connection, the council were asked on the 6th ultimo for a report on the amount of rock excavation to be anticipated in these sections. No reply to that request has yet been received.

I am still of opinion that the greater part of this work could be carried out by direct labour with advantage to the local authority.

asked the Minister for Local Government if application has been made to his Department to sanction a sewerage scheme for Kanturk town, County Cork; and, if so, when sanction will be forthcoming.

Mr. Murphy

Proposals for a sewerage schemes at Kanturk have been received in the Department, and certain revisions and amendments of the design were suggested to the council in a letter of the 23rd October last. The scheme is now with the council's consulting engineer to carry out further investigations in connection with the recommendations made by the Department.
