Vol. 113 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Vocational Schools' Caretakers.

asked the Minister for Education whether his Department received a resolution from the City of Cork Vocational Education Committee last June approving the payment of a bonus of 11/- weekly to the caretakers employed by that committee: and, if so, whether he intends to sanction this bonus without further delay to enable the committee to grant the increase before Christmas.

The City of Cork Vocational Education Committee have submitted proposals to my Department to increase the rates of remuneration of members of their caretaking staffs.

As the greater number of these employees were, prior to consolidation, paid on a basic plus bonus basis, it was necessary before a decision could be taken that consideration should be given to the cases of similar employees of other vocational education committees, some of whom have likewise applied for this increase, and also to the question of salaries and wages to officers and employees of vocational education committees.

The whole matter is at present under review, and a decision will be communicated to the Cork Vocational Committee at the earliest possible moment.

Is the Minister aware that at least two of these caretakers have only a little over £3 per week without any emoluments at all? They are in charge of the compulsory schools and they do not come under the scheme.

The principle at stake covers the entire general question. It is necessary to have the whole question decided before making any recommendation.

They do not come under that scheme at all.
