Vol. 113 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bacon Pigs.

Mr. Lehane

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that while the price of hams has been increased to the consumer, the bacon curers have reduced the price they are paying the producer for heavy bacon pigs; and, if so, whether he will take steps to ensure that any reduction in the price of bacon pigs is passed on to the consumer in the form of cheaper bacon.

I am aware that there has been a slight seasonal decline in the price of bacon pigs recently. I do not consider, however, that this justifies a reduction in the selling price of bacon.

The limited increase which I recently authorised in the selling price of gammons is intended to secure, as far as possible, that maximum supplies will be available for the Christmas trade. This increase in the price of gammons is a temporary one only and operates in respect of the period from the 22nd November to the 8th of January next.
