Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is satisfied that ample quantities of seed wheat of all approved varieties of the highest standard of purity and germination are being assembled and reserved for the coming season.

While provision can be made against an over-all shortage of seed wheat, it has not been possible at any time to provide against a shortage of particular varieties.

Authorised seed wheat assemblers are arranging for the assembly or importation of such quantities and varieties of seed as they consider will be in demand.

To provide against miscalculations on the part of the assemblers, arrangements are being made whereby flour millers will build up a reserve of wheat of high germination against any shortage of seed towards the end of the season. I have already advised farmers intending to grow wheat in 1949 to book their seed requirements without delay.
