Vol. 113 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in Killorglin.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that for some years past serious flooding has taken place in Longford Street, Killorglin, County Kerry; that every effort has been made to influence the local authority to remedy the position which many hold was of its making but with no effect; and, if so, whether he will take steps to ensure that the necessary drainage work is carried out immediately.

This is entirely a matter for the local authority. I have had inquiries made from the county council and have ascertained that the flooding is caused by the inadequacy of two gulleys and a sewer to take flood water, resulting in the water collecting on the roadway. Difficulty was experienced by the local authority in securing the agreement of neighbouring landholders to the running of an alternative drain through their lands to take off flood water. I am informed that a provisional agreement has now been made with one of the landholders and that this will shortly come before the local authority for consideration. I understand that, in the meantime, every effort is being made by the local authority to clear the flood water by pumping, but the recent heavy rain in the area has probably added to the difficulties.
