Vol. 113 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sites for Houses in Finglas.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make representations to Dublin Corporation in connection with their proposal to acquire sites for 4,000 houses in the Finglas, County Dublin, area, with a view to securing that a proportion of these dwellings will be utilised to remedy the local housing problem at Finglas.

Mr. Murphy

I understand that the needs of the working classes in Finglas area will be substantially met when the schemes at present in progress in the area are completed. The local authority are, however, conducting a new survey of housing needs in the area and if this shows that further houses are needed they will be provided as expeditiously as possible. The Deputy's suggestion may prove feasible if and when the city boundary is extended in the Finglas direction.

Does the Minister consider that it would be no more than reasonable that a certain proportion of these 4,000 houses about to be built in Finglas would be set aside, as a safeguard against the ever-increasing housing problem in that area, for the requirements of the local people?

Mr. Murphy

I would hope that that matter would be settled in due course between the corporation and the Dublin County Council. Any arrangement that can be made in that direction will, I feel sure, take into account the fact that the Deputy has mentioned.
