Vol. 113 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Burial Ground at Balgriffin.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the present position in relation to the proposed burial ground at Burgage, Balgriffin, and also whether he will arrange that this much-needed cemetery is provided without delay.

Mr. Murphy

It appears that certain objections have been raised by the landowners concerned to the acquisition by the county council of the land proposed to be acquired for the purpose of providing a burial ground at this place. An application was made by the county council for a local inquiry in relation to the matter. The council has been advised that before they can acquire, otherwise than by agreement, land for such a purpose, there must be full compliance with those requirements of Section 203 of the Public Health (Ireland) Act, 1878, which lay down the procedure in relation to the submission, after due notice, of a petition to the Minister for compulsory powers. The matter appears to be still under consideration by the county council. I am having a reminder sent to the council and the Deputy may take it that, so far as the Department is concerned, if and when a petition is submitted consideration of the matter will be expedited at all stages.
