Vol. 114 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surplus Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that many farmers are anxious to know if an export market will be available for our surplus potatoes of the 1949 crop; and, if so, whether he will state (i) what the prospects of such a market are, and (ii) the variety of potatoes best suited to the British market.

I expect that there will be an export market in Britain for 50,000 tons of ware potatoes of the 1949 crop at prices similar to those payable for the 1948 crop. Normally the varieties best suited to the British market are white main crop varieties such as Arran Banner, Arran Consul and Up-to-Date; Kerr's Pink is also a useful export variety.
