Vol. 114 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - P.O. Temporary Labourers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will indicate the weekly rates of wages paid to temporary labourers employed by the Post Office Engineering Department (i) inside the Cork Borough area, and (ii) in the area immediately outside the borough; and whether, in view of the fact that nearly all the men so employed are drawn from within the borough, he will consider paying the city rate to the men working in the outside area.

Casual labourers employed by the engineering branch in Cork are paid at the rate of 108s. 6d. per 47-hour week for work in the county borough and at 63s. 6d. per 48-hour week for work outside the county borough. The scene of the work determines the rate of wages.

Has the Minister any intention of increasing the rate outside the borough?

I want to assure the Deputy that they have much more than they had this time 12 months.

Will the Minister consider giving an increase in view of the increased bus fares that they have to pay in going out from the city?

And they have to pay a much higher cost of living.

That is untrue.

It is not untrue.

If the Deputy had his way, they would have no buses at all.
