Vol. 115 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Property Revaluations.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that grave dissatisfaction exists throughout the country and especially in County Monaghan due to the sporadic revaluation of property resulting in an unbearable increase in the rates on the individuals concerned; and, if so, whether he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to end this piecemeal revaluation until some comprehensive scheme of revaluation is decided upon which would ensure an equitable distribution of rates.

I am not aware that the position arising out of revision of valuations is as stated by the Deputy. Any resultant increases in valuation merely reflect increases in the net annual letting values of the properties concerned. In the circumstances, I cannot consider introducing proposals for legislation as suggested by the Deputy.

Considering the burden which, the Parliamentary Secretary should be aware, does exist in connection with this revaluation of property, will he agree that the system obtaining at the present does not result in an equitable distribution of the burden of rates?

I believe that it is the best system we can have in operation at the present time.
