Vol. 116 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Louth Water Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (i) the date on which the water scheme for Baltray, Termonfeckin and Clogherhead was sanctioned by his Department; (ii) what steps have since been taken to complete the preparatory work in connection therewith; (iii) what are the causes of the delay in starting the work; (iv) whether he can expedite the commencement of the scheme, and (v) on what date the actual work will be put in hand.

The invitation of tenders for the main contract in connection with this scheme was approved on the 19th July, 1948, and at the same time the local authority was requested to submit a specification for ancillary works including pumping and filtration plant. Tenders were duly obtained and on the 8th November last the county council were informed that no objection would be raised to their proposal to accept the lowest tender. Tenders for the ancillary works were received recently and are under consideration.

The delay in starting the work is due to the difficulty in securing water pipes. I am informed that delivery of the pipes ordered for this scheme is expected next month and that there should be no further delay in starting work.
