Vol. 116 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Hosiery Goods.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Irish manufacturers cannot sell hosiery goods in competition not only with quantities of similar goods imported in 1947 but also with subsidised British hosiery goods imported in spite of the 25 per cent. tariff imposed early in 1948; and, if so, whether he will now prohibit the importation of these goods until the surplus stocks existing in this country have been disposed of and thereby ensure that Irish hosiery factories will not be compelled to curtail or cease production.

I have referred the question of further protection for the hosiery industry to the Industrial Development Authority for urgent examination. I understand that the authority has arranged to meet representatives of the industry this week.
