Vol. 116 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Imported Timber.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Timber Importers, Limited, are paying an unnecessarily high price per standard for imported soft woods, and if he will permit the importation of timber by persons or firms in a position to purchase same at a substantially lower price.

I am not aware that Timber Importers, Limited, are paying an unnecessarily high price for imported softwood timber. I am reviewing the company's present system of importation and distribution of softwood timber. Until this examination is concluded, I do not propose to grant licences to individual importers.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that Timber Importers, Limited, were paying £124 per big standard when timber could be imported by other firms in this city at £96 per big standard?

The present price is £95 per Irish standard. On a former occasion, when inquiries were instituted in view of a suggestion that cheaper timber was available, it was found that the particular consignment did not take into consideration carriage and a number of other matters which should be included.
