Vol. 117 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Spanish and British Trawlers.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has received any reports of Spanish and British trawlers fishing inside the three mile limit between Mizen Head and Gally Head, and whether he is aware that lines and nets belonging to local fishermen have been cut by these foreign trawlers; and, if so, whether he will take steps to see that the livelihood of our inshore fishermen in this area is protected.

No reports have recently been received by my Department of Spanish and British trawlers fishing in territorial waters between Mizen Head and Gally Head and I am not aware that lines and nets belonging to local fishermen have been cut by such trawlers. The interests of our fishermen are being protected to the utmost extent possible by the vessels which are available for the purpose.
