Vol. 117 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Industrial School Tradesmen.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the tradesmen employed at St. Joseph's Industrial School, Ferrybank, Clonmel, are underpaid and do not receive pensions on retirement; and, if so, whether it is his intention to take immediate steps to increase the pay of these men and to make their posts pensionable.

Tradesmen in reformatory and industrial schools are employed directly and remunerated by the conductors of these schools and not by my Department. Their rate of pay is, accordingly, a matter for arrangement between them and their employers.

Under Section 56 of the Children Act, 1908, the managers of certified schools may establish a scheme for the payment of superannuation allowances to officers employed in their schools. The expenses of such a scheme would, under the provisions of the section, be borne by the school managers. My Department is not empowered to establish a scheme for pensions for such employees.
