Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Sand.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that sand is being imported from Belgium by the Ringsend Glass Bottle Factory for use in the manufacture of their products; and, if so, whether he is prepared to take such steps as are necessary to ensure that this company will utilise the Irish sand available.

I am aware that sand is being imported from Belgium, but as there are no restrictions on importation I have no knowledge as to the persons by whom it is being imported or as to the extent of the imports, if any, by the company to which the Deputy refers.

On the information at present available to me I am not prepared to impose control on the imports of sand either generally or in a particular case, but consideration will be given to any detailed proposal in the matter which may be submitted by interested parties.

Is the Minister aware that sufficient quantities of sand suitable for the industry carried on by the glass bottle factory are available in this country? Can he, therefore, give any reason why it should be imported?

If the Deputy has any information, or can secure any information which is not at my disposal, I shall be very glad to get it and I shall give further consideration to the matter then.
