Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Superannuation Scheme for Pilots.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the pilots of Aer Lingus, upon whom so much responsibility for public safety lies, and whose safety record is so high, have not yet been provided with a superannuation scheme; and if he could intervene in the matter.

The question of providing a superannuation scheme for the pilots and other employees of Aer Lingus is under consideration by the Government and until a decision is taken there is no useful action which I can take in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that these men are in a peculiar position? They must face retirement at the age of 45 years and that places a claim on the company and on the community in general. It is a position which, I think, is quite different from that of any other class of employees in this State. Furthermore, as it is a State-sponsored company, I think we in this House should take direct responsibility.

Will the Minister take such steps as are necessary to break the strike?

I am conversant with all the facts of this case. As I have stated, the matter is under consideration by the Government, and I do not think it would be either useful or desirable to add anything to that.

Will the Minister bear in mind that representations in regard to a superannuation scheme have been made continuously since 1946 on behalf of all the staff?

I am also aware of that.
