Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roe Commission Findings.

asked the Minister for Education if he will be in a position to announce the findings of the Roe Commission before the Adjournment of the Dáil for the Summer Recess, and if he will at the same time state when the recommendations of the commission will be implemented; alternatively, if he is not in a position to announce the findings before the recess, when he will be able to do so; and, further, if he will state, in view of the fact that the commission reported to him over two months ago, the reason for the delay in publishing and implementing the recommendations of the commission.

asked the Minister for Education whether he expects the Government's consideration of the Report of the Roe Commission to be completed in time to enable him to make a statement on teachers' salaries and pensions before the Summer Recess.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

The Government's consideration of this matter has not yet reached a point which would enable me to say when an announcement may be expected.

Is the Minister aware that there are a number of teachers who feel that they are unable to go on holidays this year because the report of this commission is not yet available?

Is the Minister aware that there is growing dissatisfaction amongst teachers at the delay in making public the findings of the commission?

With regard to the first supplementary question, I have no information on that point. With regard to the second supplementary question, all that I know is that at a meeting of Dublin teachers, when an amendment was moved to some resolution which asked that the report be published, the amendment was defeated. As far as I am concerned, the question of publishing the report is being deferred until the Government has completed its consideration of it. I would ask Deputies to understand that there really has not been any delay in considering this matter, which is an important one, and that there will not be any unnecessary delay.
