Vol. 118 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Oats in Distilleries.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that oats were used in distilleries last year because the quantity of homegrown and imported barley did not meet requirements; and, if so, whether he has any statement to make in the matter.

Limited quantities of oats are used by distilleries in the normal course of manufacture every year. As far as I am aware the quantity of barley secured by all five distilleries from the 1948 crop was adequate for their requirements.

Is the Minister aware that in County Dublin a number of farmers have been left with quantities of barley on their hands for which they cannot get sale? Will the Minister inquire into this position with a view to securing that these men will not suffer any loss on this account?

I cannot see how that arises.

It does not arise.

I trust the Deputy reads the daily papers. If he does he will have seen some very trenchant observations from me in regard to the matter he has indicated.

I do not think the Minister said anything about County Dublin.

It is always near my heart.
