Vol. 118 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Sheep Stocks.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that, with the increased prices paid for ewes and wethers in Donegal, sheep stocks are being depleted; and if he will take the necessary steps to protect and, if possible, extend, sheep rearing in our mountain areas which are so suitable for the development of this valuable industry.

I know that stocks of blackface sheep in County Donegal had seriously declined in numbers, but I am glad to inform the Deputy that that trend is now reversed. While the number of sheep in the county was approximately 147,000 in June, 1947, it is now believed to be in excess of 160,000.

Prices for sheep are good and blackface wool is making up to 2/- a lb. In 1948 under the special congested districts scheme 77 blackface rams were located in County Donegal and 88 in 1949. It is hoped next year to meet all the requirements of flockowners in this regard. I believe the quality and stamina of the sheep is steadily improving and with rejuvenated grazing the prospect of hill sheep farming is excellent for those engaged in it.

I have arranged for the carrying out of a survey by an expert of international reputation with a view to determining the manner in which the productivity of hill grazings generally might be increased. I would look forward, therefore, to a continued increase in sheep in County Donegal in the future.

In the next three weeks?

Oh, no, even this Government cannot produce miracles like that.
