Vol. 118 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bacon.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has had or proposes to have the promised discussion with the British Government in regard to the price to be paid by them for our surplus bacon; and whether he will give the Dáil some information about the matter and some indication as to the price to be paid to the farmer in the next two years.

Discussions on this subject have taken place with the British authorities and are continuing. A price of 225/- per cwt. f.o.b. for Wiltshire sides has been agreed for the period to 31st December, 1949, and it is expected than an agreement will be concluded at an early date in respect of the year 1950. It may be taken that the price to be paid for bacon exported from this country to Great Britain will not be less than the highest price paid for bacon imported into Great Britain from any other country.

I consider that these agreements will enable satisfactory prices to be paid for pigs.
