Vol. 118 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mitchelstown Sewerage System.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will undertake to provide a very substantial grant from the Transition Development Fund towards the cost of installing a new sewerage system in Mitchelstown in view of the fact that as this is an experimental scheme and the first attempt to solve the problem of the filtering of creamery effluent, the cost will be heavier than is usual for such schemes.

As the Deputy is aware, the Transition Development Fund is a temporary fund fed by voted moneys. At present grants from the fund for sewerage schemes are made only in respect of certain works to be carried out up to March 31, 1950. The technical nature of a scheme has not been a factor which has been considered in the allocation of grants from the fund. As the fund is a temporary one I am not in a position to promise consideration of an application for a grant from it in respect of the Mitchelstown sewerage scheme which has not yet reached the stage at which the work may be commenced.

Is the Minister aware that this scheme is a very big experiment? I would ask him to confer with the Minister for Agriculture, inasmuch as this is the first attempt to solve the problem of the filtering of ceramery effluent. I think we should get something in payment from the Minister for carrying out this experiment.

All those matters will be considered.
